On Friday 17 June, a delegation of 10 representatives of Kenya’s energy sector spent the day at ECA’s office to discuss various current and upcoming engagements that ECA has in the Kenyan energy sector. The delegation represented the Ministry of Energy and Petroleum, the Energy Regulatory Commission, Kenya Power, the Kenya Electricity Transmission Company and the Kenya Geothermal Development Company. The projects being discussed were two engagements that ECA currently has with the Ministry of Energy and Petroleum in the rural electricity mini-grids sector: development of a comprehensive policy and regulatory mini-grid framework, and pre-feasibility of 30 mini-grid sites for development. Another discussion was held on the challenges the Kenyan energy sector will face from daily surpluses of energy that are not fully utilised, and approaches for addressing this. Most of the delegation were well known to ECA from previous assignments, particularly our work developing the Framework for Small-Scale Renewable Energy and associated training workshops.
