The Central American countries are relatively small in terms of the economic scale for LNG and gas to power projects. ECA has been contracted by the World Bank to look into ways of reducing the cost of electricity through the supply of natural gas, and to consider what business and contractual models might help to make the introduction of natural gas economically and technically. The main objective of this work is to evaluate the potential feasibility for LNG for electricity generation. In particular, the advice will focus on the relative merits of different options for coordination among the countries and sharing infrastructure or LNG procurement. The recommendations will cover the preferred options and measures to overcome some barriers to implementation.
