Power planning and sustainable hydropower in the Mekong Basin

Jun 27, 2018

William Derbyshire, together with Palakorn Chanbanyong of the Mekong River Commission, presented to the 24th meeting of the Regional Power Trade Coordination Committee for the Greater Mekong Subregion. The RPTCC is the multi-country entity developing arrangements for greater integration of cross-border power exchanges between the GMS member countries (Cambodia, China, Lao PDR, Myanmar, Thailand and Vietnam). William’s presentation focused on the linkages between the Sustainable Hydropower Development Strategy that ECA is preparing for the MRC and the power planning studies being conducted by RPTCC members. It drew attention to the potential benefits and impacts of Mekong hydropower for the region and to the need to better align national plans for hydropower development to improve effectiveness.
